On August 14th, 1993, Amber Nicole Calhoun was born into this world with dreams much bigger than her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. As the youngest of four siblings, she was greatly influenced by her family, which frequented church services and actively participated in their congregation's choir. At age 8, she began to excel at the art of piano. And by the young age of 10, she had finished composing her first original song, "Rescue Me." At 13, she was given the opportunity to begin recording her own music. Her first recording session was provided as a gift from her family as an expression of their full support in their youngest member's passionate dream. Her musical talent and vocal ability flourished throughout her high school career and she was rewarded with a full scholarship to Kentucky State University where she studied with a triple major in vocal studies, composition, and piano. Soon after beginning her college career, Amber made the bold decision to legally change her first name to Chanson, which translates to Song in French. This decision proved the songstress' dedication to her dream and her passion for music. The new name defined her life more clearly. After officially becoming Chanson, the artist recorded her first mix-tape from the comfort of her college dorm room. "Stuck in Suspension," compiled of ten original songs, was released on September 20th, 2012 when the artist was just 19. Her sophomore compilation, "Nothing But the Covers," was released just three months later on Christmas day. Both served as impressive demonstrations of Chanson's musical talent. Around this time, Chanson began competing in talent competitions, including her college's talent show, from which she won the extraordinary opportunity to open for rapper, Rick Ross and Trina in Frankfort, Kentucky. She has also seized the opportunity to audition for national talent searches such as American Idol, The Voice, and The X-Factor. At the age of 19, after studying at Kentucky State University for three semesters, Chanson decided to take a different direction towards achieving her goal and made the move to San Diego, California where she lived with a close childhood friend for nearly three months. During this time, she distributed several copies of her mix-tapes and showcased her talent as much as possible. She also competed in the annual Kuumba Festival's Apollo Edition talent contest in which she won first place. This accomplishment led her to several major music producers and engineers, all with impressive musical portfolios. One, of which, was Jaz Williams, chief engineer at San Diego's BatKave Studios, most well-known for his work with mainstream rapper, Ludacris. Williams saw something unique in Chanson after hearing her music and provided her with free recording opportunities in his studio. After her brief, yet beneficial time spent in San Diego, Chanson returned to Louisville to gain the support of her hometown. On August 14th, 2014 Chanson launched her independent record label, EMPIRE RECORDS, by having a full concert which was located at HARD ROCK LOUISVILLE. Because of this thrilling concert, the songstress has managed to build an empire of dedicated entrepreneurs willing to offer their time and talents to help her become the most successful entertainer to come out of Louisville. She now works intensely with her brother, Harold Calhoun, (also known as SOLE) producer of Sole Music Productions.
